Shea butter, once a neglected natural resource in Uganda, has today emerged as a powerful symbol of healthy skincare, environmental protection, biodiversity preservation, and economic empowerment. At the heart of this transformation is the vision and dedication of Dr. Surjit Singh.
The Journey Begins (1990)
The Shea Butter Mantra journey began in 1990, when Dr. Surjit Singh, an experienced oil technologist, was commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industries and Fisheries to conduct a national survey of the edible oil industry. At the time, northern Uganda was facing significant instability due to regional insurgency.
The Discovery of Mo-Yaho
While traveling through Gulu, Kitgum, and Lira, Dr. Singh witnessed women grinding shea nuts between heavy stones. This traditional process—locally known as "Mo-Yaho"—involved boiling the mixture for an entire day to extract the butter used for cooking and natural skin protection.
Scientific Innovation
Dr. Surjit Singh recognized that traditional methods, while sacred, often exposed the butter to smoke and unhygienic conditions, resulting in a dark color and reduced healing properties.
He spent years researching and developing improved processing technologies that preserve the unrefined purity, nutrients, and healing benefits of shea butter, bringing a scientific approach to this ancient practice.
Safeguarding a Species
Witnessing the widespread cutting of ancient shea trees for charcoal, Dr. Singh successfully petitioned His Excellency the President of Uganda. Highlighting the risk of the species disappearing, his efforts led to a national directive banning the cutting of shea trees. In recognition, the President honored him as the "Man of Shea Butter."
Investment & Certification
Through Guru Nanak Oil Mills (GNOM), significant investment was led into the development of world-class facilities. Since 2006, GNOM has been recognized globally, certified organic by ECOCERT under USDA NOP and European standards.
Community & Social Impact
Our vision has always centered on community empowerment. We provide registered farmers with training twice a year, collection tools, food supplies (including sugar), gum boots, and mosquito nets to ensure their safety and well-being.

We support the education of underprivileged and orphaned children, empowering them to become teachers, advocates, and professionals.

Special emphasis is placed on girl child education and providing rural women with the tools and financial independence to uplift their lives.
